World Environment Day

Environment day is celebrated worldwide on 5th June consistently every year and one theme is selected for every environment day. Environment means Plantation and to save Trees, Water and Energy Conservation, To Control Pollution, To Stop use of Plastic and Cleanliness. The Environment Day was first celebrated in 1974 in U.S. and later became recognized world wide and is celeberated in 143 countries in the world.The World Environment Day 2019 is being hoased by China with the theme “ Air Pollution  and it will urge governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality in cities and regions across the world. During last 45 years, Bangla Desh has organized it maximum 10 times. In 2018 it was organized in India under the banner of Art of Living in the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, Delhi and the then Central Environment Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan was the Chief Guest and State Minister Mahesh Sharma was the guest of honour. Shri Shri Ravi Shanker ji presided over the function. It was proudy moments for me to witness the event and I handed over a copy of Jal Chalisa to him.

It is a day of political action and civic participation. People march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees, cleanup their towns and roads. Corporations and governments use it to make pledges and announce sustainability measures. Connect Environment Day with protecting God’s greatest creations, humans, biodiversity and the planet that we all live on.

Theme of World Environment Day 2018 was End Plastic Pollution including creating support for a global effort was to eliminate primarily single-use plastics along with global regulation for the disposal of plastics.  EDN is educating millions of people about the health and other risks associated with the use and disposal of plastics including pollution of our oceans, water and wildlife and about the growing body of evidence that plastic waste is creating serious global problems. EDN built a multi year campaign to End Plastic Pollution. Our goals include ending single-use plastics, promoting alternatives to fossil fuel-based materials, promoting 100 percent recycling of plastics, corporate and government accountability and changing human behavior concerning plastics. The theme of 2017 was Environmental & Climate Literacy.

Air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances including gases, particles, and biological molecules are introduced into Earth’s atmosphere. It may cause diseases, allergies and even death to humans; it may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the natural or built environment. Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution.

Air pollutants are emitted from a range of both man-made and natural sources including:

  • burning of fossil fuels in electricity generation, transport, industry and households;
  • industrial processes and solvent use, for example in the chemical and mining industries;
  • agriculture;
  • waste treatment;
  • natural sources, including volcanic eruptions, windblown dust, sea-salt spray and emissions of volatile organic compounds from plants
  • High Woltage power lines without————
  • Nuclear plants dust
  • Mills and Plants e.g. Paper and Iron-Steel Mills, chemical and Cement factories.
  • Pesticides and insecticids
  • Indoor Air Pollution having no proper exhast facilities

The health effects caused by air pollution include difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing, asthma and worsening of existing respiratory and cardiac conditions. The human health effects of poorair quality are far reaching, but principally affect the body’s respiratory system and the cardiovascular system.

As per estimate of scientists we are losing species 1000 to 10000  times normal rate, 40% bird species are in decline, 1 in 8 is facing global extinction. The number of animals living on the land has fallen by 40% since 1970. American Bison now occupy just 1% of their original habitat.Insect populations have declined by 75% in some places of the world. Animal population in  fresh water ecosystems reduced by 75% since 1970. More than 25% of Marine life lives in coral reefs.

About a quarter of world’s coral reefs have already been damaged beyond repair and half of the worlds Tropical & Temperate forests are gone. 2 million people globally die prematurely due to indoor and outdoor pollution.  The main reason of pollution is that more than 8 million tones  of plastic is dumped in oceans every year.

Rising earth temperature —  global warming and other ecological imbalances are leading to frequent flooding, hurricanes and other dangers  and forest fires which is further aggravating loss of forest cover adding to global warming.

20% of earth population consumes 80% of its Resources. US alone with 5% of world population consumes 20% resources. Food price will go up by 50% by 2030 only because of climate change. Earth is only habitable planet and we have the responsibility to preserve it for future generations- Our Children and Nature.

Everybody should be careful to reduce pollution and wastage of every kind e.g. Air, Water and Energy and must ensure plantation every year. We should minimize the use of plastic products, never use single use plastic goods and re-use the items wherever it is possible. Must care for cleanliness and we should follow 3 R i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycling. Recycling is a bigger process and is subject matter of government and big concerns but everyone can reduce and reuse the total waste of every kind and it will affect the whole nature which is too compulsory for the healthy life of present and future generations.

Everybody should be careful to use CNG instead of Petrol and Diesel in vehilcles. Don’t use polluted raw material. We should use pollution controlled equipments particularly in Industries and generator etc. Convert wet wastage into compost and never burn any type of wastage. Use maximum solar instruments to reduce energy consumption and reduce global warming.
