PIB News  Update: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari has informed that Section 41(7) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 for “Registration, how to be made” read as- “A certificate of registration issued under sub-section (3), Whether before or after the commencement of this Act, in respect of a motor vehicle, other than a transport vehicle, shall, subject to the provisions contained in this Act, be valid only for a periods of fifteen years from the date of issue of such certificate and shall be renewable”. The Parliament has recently passed the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. Section 17 of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 provides for amendment in sub-section 7 of Section 41 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989 which reads as -“A certificate of registration issued under sub-section (3), whether before or after the commencement of this Act, in respect of a motor vehicle shall, subject to the provisions contained in this Act, be valid only for a period of fifteen years from the date of issue of such certificate or for such period as may be prescribed by the Central Government and shall be renewable.” This Ministry has made operational around 60 provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 with effect from 1st of September 2019 in whole of India vide SO 3110(E) dated 28th August, 2019 and SO 3147(E­) dated 30th August, 2019.

Further, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) vide its order dated 07.04.2015 has directed that Petrol vehicles which are more than 15 years old and diesel vehicles that are more than 10 years old shall not be registered in the NCR, Delhi.
