Reliance Jio to cover 80% of Indian population by end of 2016

Chairman of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani has revealed that his telecom venture, Reliance Jio is ready to launch its 4G service. By the end of 2016, the company aims to cover 80% of the total population of the country.

Views of Mukesh Ambani: Ambani said that 80% of the total 1.3 billion people of the country will enjoy the high-speed internet service on their smart phones by the end of 2016. Reliance Jio will be covering 90% of the population by the end of 2017 and in the following year, the company will cover the entire country with its digital infrastructure.

Earlier, Reliance Jio claimed that it will invest more than INR 1 lakh crore till the commercial launch. This will include the cost of spectrum, infrastructure, human resources, and marketing, among others. Ambani feels that the investment on digital infrastructure will be very beneficial. This will take the country ahead in the race of global digital revolution.

Ambani said, “In the next 20 years, in a network society, we are going to have a change much more than what we have seen in the last 100 years.”In the year 2012 – 2013, India stood at 150th position globally in terms of mobile broadband penetration as well as quality. It is expected that Reliance Jio will uplift the country’s position. Ambani wants the country to lead in the digital revolution.

Ambani said that his step in digital revolution will empower the youth of the country, which forms a large proportion of the population. New opportunities for prosperity, and being at par with the world will be offered to them.

The launch of Reliance Jio is Mukesh Ambani’s re-entry in the telecom industry after the split with his brother Anil Ambani. The telecom venture, Reliance Communications is operated by Anil Ambani. Both the telecom companies have now joined hands to share spectrum space and offer seamless and efficient 4G services to their respective customers.

Reliance Jio is the only company to have pan-India 4G Broadband Wireless Access (BWA). In 2010, Reliance Industries bought a company having pan-India 4G BWA spectrum for INR 12,847.8 crores. The company holds the highest spectrum across the bands of 800 MHz, 1,800 MHz and 2,300 MHz.

Reliance Industries made a soft launch of its 4G service in December, last year. It serves 1.2 lakh employees of the company and their families. It is distributing 4G SIM cards and discounted LYF branded 4G mobile phones through its retail venture, Reliance Retail. The company is likely to roll out its commercial service in April.
