Professor Rajendra Prasad, Director Medical Education and Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Era’s Lucknow Medical College and Hospital, Lucknow, Former Director, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Delhi, Former Director, UP Rural Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Saifai and former Head, Dept. of Pulmonary Medicine, King George’s Medical University, Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow has been Awarded Prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award by the President of India , for developing and popularising Pulmonary Medicine in India. He is a nationally acclaimed Chest Physician and Tuberculosis Expert, possessing nearly 4 decades of illustrious teaching, research and administrative experience with proven excellence in quality patient care. He has been Honorary Consultant to Armed Forces Medical Services, India in Respiratory Diseases. Currently, he is also vice chairman of National Task Force for involvement of Medical Colleges in Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme.

Prof. Prasad, born in a remote village of the state of Uttar Pradesh, has received medical education, all from K.G. Medical College, University of Lucknow. After a brilliant academic record, he made his mission to serve those suffering from Tuberculosis and joined the Department of Tuberculosis in 1976. He received advance training in Pulmonary Medicine including Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy and Lung Cancer from Japan. He is very well known for successfully transforming department of Tuberculosis into well recognised department of Pulmonary Medicine at K.G. Medical University, Lucknow by introducing and developing more than half a dozen specialist services including a Video Bronchoscopy, Medical Thoracoscopy, Thoracic Oncology unit and Sleep Lab. As Director of U.P. Rural Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Saifai, he has been instrumental in starting paramedical and nursing college there within very short span of time. As Director, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, unique and well-known globally for its contributions in the field of Chest diseases, Professor Prasad with his vast experience and knowledge has provided credible leadership for its development.

His dynamic leadership in academic, research and administrative areas have earned him 45 Awards from various National Scientific Societies. He has unique distinction of being president of all major scientific bodies in the field of Pulmonary Medicine in India like National College of Chest Physicians India, Indian Chest Society, Indian College of Allergy, Asthma & Applied Immunology, and Indian Association for Bronchology and Tuberculosis Association of India. He has been International Governor of American College of Chest Physicians USA. Besides several prestigious fellowships of reputed National and International organisations, he was elected Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India, American College of chest physicians, USA and Royal College of physicians and surgeons, Glasgow. His pioneering contribution in the field of Tuberculosis and Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has been widely acclaimed. He took keen interest in Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) from its inception and was instrumental in establishing RNTCP DOTS Center in K.G’s Medical College, which was among the first DOTS centre to run in a medical college campus in India. As the chairperson of various task forces to involve medical colleges in Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), Professor Prasad played a pivotal role in involving all the government as well as private medical colleges of India in this programme. In fact, he is rated very high among the advocate of Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme of India.

He has supervised about 165 Researches, and published 295 papers in reputed National and International Journals. He has also authored 7 books including 3 books on tuberculosis and an Atlas on Fiber optic Bronchoscopy based exclusively on Indian patients. His research contributions in respect of smoking especially Beedi Smoking and Biomass Fuel use and their association with common Respiratory Diseases like Lung Cancer, COPD and Tuberculosis are well known. Professor Prasad has made significant contribution towards popularization of scientific understanding of various common respiratory ailments like Tuberculosis, Asthma, Allergy, COPD, and Lung Cancer among Doctors as well as general population. He has delivered 1300 lectures at different International and National forums.
