PM to launch Mahatma Gandhi exhibition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Champaran Satyagraha was a historic mass movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and its impact was phenomenal. In a series of tweet, Mr Modi said, that he will inaugurate an exhibition titled ‘Swachhagraha – Bapu Ko Karyanjali’ to mark 100 years of the historic Champaran Satyagraha in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister said, the exhibition will showcase Champaran Satyagraha and it will connect essential principles of Satyagraha with Swachhagraha. He said, the exhibition will also showcase the ground covered by the Swachh Bharat Mission in creating a mass movement towards a clean India. Mr Modi also called upon the citizens to become Swachhagrahis and create a Swachh Bharat.

April of this year marks the centenary of the Champaran Satyagraha – Mahatma Gandhi’s first Satyagraha in India. Briefing reporters in New Delhi yesterday, Director General of National Archives Raghvendra Singh said, a century ago, Mahatma Gandhi had taken several steps to improve the condition of people in Champaran.

These included efforts towards basic education, skill development, women empowerment and cleanliness. Mr Singh said, the exhibition is an effort to go beyond a mere symbolic recall and to re-emphasize the spirit of cleanliness which was close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart and was also a key element of the Champaran movement. After inaugurating the exhibition, Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a gathering on the lawns of the National Archives.

The Bihar Government will today launch an year long celebrations to mark the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will kick start the year long celebration with an opening ceremony in Patna. Our correspondent reports that two day National Seminar is also scheduled in Patna today.

A program to felicitate freedom fighters has also been organised on 17th of this month. President Pranab Mukherjee will also attended the function.
