Background

Given its employment and export intensity, the textiles and apparel industry plays a significant role in realizing the vision of ‘Make in India’. To enable the industry to play its due role towards this, it is necessary to address some critical constraints which adversely affect the sector. Inadequate infrastructure is one such major constraint.

The Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks (SITP) of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India aims to fill this infrastructure gap. It seeks to do this by encouraging the industry to set up greenfield industrial parks with partial capital grant support from the Ministry.

Out of 70 textile parks approved under SITP, 30 parks are already functional and rest are at different stages of implementation. Despite the economic downturn of the last five years and an investment climate which has not been very conducive, SITP has facilitated significant investments from private sector in creating good quality and self-sufficient infrastructure. Once fully operational, all these parks are expected to generate employment for about 4,36,000 persons and attract investment to the tune of Rs. 30,000 crores.
