Indian Railways to spend Rs 38,400 crores on 12 new rail lines in North East

With a mission to integrate the Far Eastern states of India, Indian Railways will spend Rs 38,416 crores in laying 12 new rail lines. The rail lines will add 1,248 km in North Eastern Region of India. Additionally, an outlay of Rs. 5,338 cores has been provided for speedier execution of projects mired with shortage of funds. It’s important to note that the average railway network density in this region is half of national average of 20 km per 1,000 sq km of railway network.

North East Region railways_Indianbureaucracy1Indian Railways increased its allocation by 53.3% to Rs 5,200 crores in year 2014-15 compared to Rs. 3,392 crores in 2013-14 to bring the region on National rail road grid.

Most recently, the state of Meghalaya was connected with the rest of Indian Railway network when a new line of 19.62 Km from Dudhnoi to Mendipathar in Rangiya Division was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in November 2014.
