  5. Dear Madan,

    My name is Umesh Kumar Tiwari and I am an NRI with my family residing in Rohini, Delhi (House #307, Block B9, Sector-3 Rohini). I am writing this e-mail in great distress and agony, let me tell you why. Today (15December 2020) at round 8pm, my family (wife, 80 years old mother and two minor children) were pushed in the corner by my new neighbour on some issues related to parking. My wife told them that my husband is out of the country and they can talk to me when I return back in the first week of January 2021, but this did not work with my neighbour and they continued fighting with my family. Finally, my wife called the police control room using the phone (+91 73035 26755- used by my son) asking for help. Three police officials showed up, but to our surprise, they started lashing out on my family instead. I was physically not present but I was hearing the conversation. The older gentleman (in uniform- my wife told me this) was saying that pick my wife and my minor son and put them behind the bar for 24 hours to teach them a lesson (for calling police?). This was very unfortunate that the female plaintiff is being thrashed instead of defendants, especially by a male police officer. Before leaving, he even told that he will put my wife behind the bars if she complains again. My wife told that he (the old age male police officer) was instigated by some property dealer who seems to be my neighbour’s friend/relative. Another gentlemen (police officer) who joined the team later was reasonable, though. Unfortunately, my wife did not note name of the officials (the older man was in uniform but the two young officers were in civil dress).

    I have following submissions;
    1. Don’t we deserve a fair treatment by the law enforcement agency (Police)?
    If it is not a fair expectation then I don’t need to leave my family behind me in Delhi. I don’t have anybody except the police whom I trusted in all these 11 years when I took an international assignment and I have been mostly out of the country. I thought, the police will be there to help my family in the time of such a need. But, today’s incident has shattered by trust and my family is in real fear. You can understand the situation when our savior has become hostile.
    2. I am about 50 years old and spent most of my live in social service (worked for more than 30 years with NGOs for underprivileged communities) and, I think, me and my family deserve to live with some dignity.
    On what ground the police officer was threatening my wife and my minor son to put them behind the bar in the night (9pm local time)? I really, want to understand this.

    While writing this e-mail, I have been continuously talking to my wife and kids and counselling them to be alright and not to worry.

    I would appreciate your support in rebuilding this trust.

    Warm regards,

    Umesh
