Achyuta Samanta Receives Top Civilian Award from Republic of Mongolia

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, noted social entrepreneur and reformer from India, was honoured with ‘Best Worker’, the highest civilian award of Republic of Mongolia, in a ceremony at Ulaanbaatar – the capital of Mongolia. Dr. Achyuta Samanta was conferred upon this recognition for his outstanding contribution in the field of education, social work and in appreciation for his relentless efforts to create an equitable world sans poverty and ignorance.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta received the award in absentia. Persons of high social standing, institutions of national importance and non-governmental organisations with national and international recognition propose the names of individuals, organisations working for the society in diverse fields, to the concerned Ministries to consider conferring ‘Best Worker’ award. After scrutiny, the concerned ministries send the names of the selected nominee to the Parliament, which decides on it through a rigorous process. Once the Parliament ratifies the proposal, it goes for Presidential assent. Only after the President puts his seal of approval, the nominee is declared as ‘Best Worker’ in the field. Dr. Achyuta Samanta has been declared as ‘Best Worker’ by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Ministry of Labour.
‘Best Worker’ is, incidentally, the highest civilian award any person of foreign origin could get. Dr. Achyuta Samanta has become the first Odia to receive this coveted award being chosen by two separate Ministries of the government of Mongolia. The awards contain citations and gold medal. Since Dr. Samanta’s name was proposed by Hangai University and Prof. Dr. Timur Ochir, former Speaker and a former Education Minister, Hangai organized a function to congratulate Dr. Samanta. Besides, Dr. Samanta was accorded a grand civil reception in the city centre, Ulaanbaatar.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta has been relentlessly working for the upliftment of the poor indigenous community in Odisha for the last two-and-a-half decades. His passion led him to establish Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a free residential institute for 25,000 tribal children. He also founded KIIT, a group of professional institutes, to make this social enterprise sustainable through a unique and innovative financial model. KISS has received worldwide recognition as an effective model of empowerment of indigenous people through education. His model is now being replicated in many states of India as well as abroad. Dr. Samanta has been honoured with numerous national and international recognitions for his noble work, including Gusi Peace Prize International in 2014 and Isa Award for Service to Humanity.
