4 day conference to focus on Planning Mobility for City Sustainability

In the context of rising concerns over atmospheric pollution and congestion in urban areas, about 1,000 Mayors and Municipal Councilors will discuss making roads pedestrian friendly and smart parking solutions. These issues will be deliberated in two exclusive sessions for Mayors and Councilors as part of the four day long ‘Urban Mobility India Conference and Expo’ beginning in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from tomorrow i.e November 8,2016

Minister of Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information & Broadcasting Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the conference. About 2,500 delegates from India and 25 foreign countries will deliberate on various aspects of ‘Planning Mobility for City’s Sustainability’. Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Vijaybhai Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Shri Nitinbhai Patel will also attend the inaugural session.

After 8 UMI Conferences held in Delhi since 2008, it is being held outside of Delhi for the first time in Gandhinagar with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan as the focus States.

Aimed at enhancing the knowledge of State and city governments on various aspects of low carbon climate friendly urban transport, the other issues to be discussed are; Improving city bus service, Financing metro systems, Multi-modal Transport solutions, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for smart mobility, Road safety, smart urban mobility planning, Ensuring access for common man to urban transport, Smart mobility solutions in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan etc.

Mr. Chang Woom Lee, President, Korea Transport Institute will deliver the keynote address.

Participation in UMI Conference has increased from 500 in 2008 to 2,500 in the Gandhinagar Conference.Minister of State for Planning(Independent Charge) and Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Shri Rao Inderjit Singh will present Awards for Excellence in Urban Transport and Urban Mobility on the last day of conference.
