Whether this will check the crime rate in the capital is uncertain, but in the coming year, Delhi will not be short of investigating officers. In an unprecedented step, Delhi Police has decided to promote 25,827 personnel currently holding ranks from constables to assistant sub-inspectors to the next level, among them head constables to the rank of assistant sub-inspectors, thus qualifying them to handle cases as investigating officers.
The promotion of the head constables would substantially ease the load of the incumbent investigating officers. Senior officers said these special grade policemen would be given the responsibility of handling petty cases that are currently probed by officers of a higher rank.
The police department will also boost the force strength from 81,000 to over 95,000 next year. In addition, the promotions will pave the way for the recruitment of 5,000 constables every year.
“Police commissioner Alok Verma has announced that ground-level officers will be automatically promoted to a rank higher after completing 15 and 25 years of service or for exemplary performance,” explained Depender Pathak, Delhi Police spokesperson. “A constable designated as ‘head constable (special grade)’ will be promoted to the grade of head constable as and when his turn comes in the regular line of promotion unless he or she is found ineligible for the post.”
